Winter Sports

It doesn't matter what season you come to Shekinah there is always a lot to see, do and explore. Shekinah encourages you to get outside and interact with nature in which ever way you see fit, however we do have a number of fun and exciting things for you to do to help guide your experience:

In the spring, summer and fall you can zip across the ravine on the flying fox or ring the bell at the top of the climbing wall. There are nine different initiative tasks that groups can take on. Not only are they fun and challenging, but they require team work, leadership and some skill to successfully accomplish them all.

If water is where you want to explore why not rent some canoes and take them out for a paddle. You can take them on the pond onto the safe an shallow river channel or even set up for a longer trip down the North Saskatchewan River.

There are countless hiking trails in and beyond our 287 acres and we have trails that are suitable for everyone from families with small children to those that really want to work up a sweat and see some great views. If you want a bit more excitement then why not rent one of our mountain bikes and explore the trails in the river valley that way!

Once your are done exploring there are many more games and activities that you can do right around the facilities. We have a beach volley ball court, a baseball diamond and an 18-hole frisbee golf course. The score-orienteering game is not just a fun activity, but a great way to get teams working and communicating together while having fun and learning new skills.

If exploring the natural environment is what you are interested in then there are an incredible number of opportunities to see a wide variety of birds, flowers, and if your are lucky, the small and large animals that inhabit the diverse set of habitats and environments that Shekinah is home to. This is a popular place for photography and it's a good idea to carry a camera with you as you never know what you might run into as you explore the valley.

Once the snow flies and winter sets in it's time to grab your jacket and toque and continue on having fun. The main winter attraction that makes the eyes pop out of so many kids' heads is the toboggan hill. Being in a river valley has some major advantages and the toboggan hill that is to the envy of all others is one of them! If you can tear yourself away from the hill then why not rent and strap on a set of cross-country skis for the day? If you are just starting out we have some great areas that we take our track-setter through as well as some of the easier trails that we can groom. If you are prepared to break trail then everything is fair game and you have a natural winter-wonderland to explore.

Possibly the best way to explore the trails in winter is with a couple snowshoes attached to your boots. With the ability to go anywhere you truly get some unique opportunities to explore and see some sights and scenery that only the wildlife gets to see. Snowshoeing is also a great way to get off the beaten track and look for the tracks that pass through our land. While we rarely see the animals that are mostly nocturnal, winter is the perfect time to see the imprints that they leave behind. We have seen tracks made by lynx, wolf and other larger predators and it truly is exciting to get a glimpse into their world.

Closer to the facilities we also offer ice-skating and broomball. Depending on the winter we sometimes have a couple different options if sliding on frozen water is your thing. It's worth a call to the office before you come out to see what we are skating on at that time!

It doesn't matter when you are thinking about coming out because there is so much to see and do at Shekinah that you really can't make a bad decision! We look forward to seeing you soon!
